We all face difficult situations from time to time which can easily leave us feeling discouraged and defeated. However, maintaining a consciousness of gratitude can help us focus on what really matters. Gratitude shifts your focus from what your life lacks to the abundance that is already present; and the more you focus on the best in life, the more you will attract the best in life.

To keep a sense of gratitude foremost in your mind takes practice and it starts with a commitment. Here are a few things that I’ve found helpful along my journey for keeping gratitude in my attitude…

  1. Make a commitment to start practicing being grateful.
    We cannot grow spiritually by assuming that everything will naturally come to us. Imagine losing some of the things that you take for granted, such as your home, your family, your ability to walk, see or laugh. Imagine losing one of the many things that makes life more comfortable and enjoyable and how different life would be without it.
  2. Look for the silver lining.
    This won’t always be easy. Naturally shifting our focus to the bright side of a bad situation isn’t something most of us do naturally. However, the more we practice doing this, the easier it becomes.
  3. Keep it up so that it becomes a significant part of your life.
    You will find that practicing daily gratitude exercises will help you appreciate the simple things in life that you may have previously taken for granted. Gratitude isn’t about getting what your want; it’s about shifting your perspective so that you become consciously aware of the many blessings in you already have.
